Better view of humanity

I walked past the hot dog stand, and saw a sign for hot chocolate - $1.00, so I thought I'd get some. I ordered one, and before he made it, I looked in my wallet and couldn't find the 6 dollars that I knew I had in it. So I said "ah maybe not". Then the man in the stand looked at me and said well, why don't you just come back later and you can pay me then. But I said, well, let me see if I have it in change..so I was digging around in my change purse, when the lady behind me piped up with "how much do you need honey?" and I said, "just a quarter" and she gave it to me, but had about 3 quarters ready for me. I gave the money to the man, and then I thanked the lady... and then I found the dollar bill hidden between two credit cards. I told the lady I had found it, but she said, don't worry about it it's no trouble at all...have you ever seen Pay it forward? I smiled and nodded, and thanked her again.
What is interesting to me is that both of those people were going out of their way to help me buy a hot chocolate...something I didn't necessarily need, and was prepared to do without. Maybe it's because I look like a nice, sweet innocent girl...or because they were both older than me. Or maybe I just have a generally pessimistic view of humanity (or mabye just Americans) that needs to be altered. Whatever the case, I was suprised and humbled by the experience. To tell the truth, I feel like it took more humility to accept the money from the woman, than to walk away and just not get the hot chocolate because I didn't have the money. At any rate, the hot chocolate was absolutely delicious, and I enjoyed every swallow of it.
